Project Overview

Unotech needed a clientless remote desktop gateway that lets users access remote PCs — Ubuntu servers, Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016 — directly from the browser without installing any client-side software. FoogleTech implemented and customised Apache Guacamole, extending it with an improved copy-paste mechanism that works like traditional desktop copy-paste, replacing the complex and lengthy default Guacamole clipboard workflow.

The Engineering Challenge

  • Apache Guacamole's default copy-paste functionality is complex and non-intuitive — users must manually interact with a clipboard panel to transfer text between their local machine and the remote desktop, unlike the familiar Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V workflow most users expect.
  • Multiple remote environments needed to be supported simultaneously — Ubuntu 20.04 servers (via SSH), Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016 — each requiring specific connection profiles and SFTP file transfer configuration.
  • SFTP-based file upload and browsing needed to work seamlessly within the browser session, allowing users to transfer files to remote servers without switching to a separate FTP client.
  • The solution had to be deployable on-premise within Unotech's own infrastructure — no cloud dependency — running on a local server accessible via LAN at 192.168.x.x.

Our Solution

  • Deployed and configured Apache Guacamole on Ubuntu with Tomcat as the application server — providing a fully browser-based remote desktop gateway accessible from any device on the network without client installation.
  • Implemented and modified the Guacamole copy-paste mechanism to work like traditional desktop copy-paste — users can simply copy content on their local machine and paste it directly into the remote session, eliminating the complex clipboard panel workflow.
  • Configured SSH and SFTP connection profiles for all target environments: ubuntu-20.04-server, windows-7-server, windows-10-server, and windows-server-2016 — with secure credential management and Base64 host key validation.
  • Built AngularJS frontend customisations and Java backend extensions using Maven for build automation — enabling the enhanced clipboard functionality and session management features Unotech required.
  • Integrated SFTP file browser within the Guacamole session — allowing users to upload, browse, and manage files on remote servers directly from the browser interface.
