Project Overview

FoogleTech developed a comprehensive Android-based POS application on PAX hardware for retail merchants and restaurant/hospitality operators, supporting the full spectrum of modern payment methods: contactless NFC, EMV chip insert, magnetic stripe swipe, and QR-code payments. The system includes restaurant-specific tip management, full refund and void workflows, comprehensive transaction history, and an optimised end-of-day settlement process designed to reduce per-transaction processing costs.

The Engineering Challenge

  • Merchants required a single terminal capable of accepting all modern payment methods — contactless, chip, swipe, and QR — without separate hardware or middleware for each tender type, demanding a unified payment abstraction layer across the PAX hardware SDK.
  • Restaurant and hospitality operators needed a configurable tip-entry workflow that could be enabled or disabled per merchant, with tip amounts captured before authorisation and reflected correctly in settlement batches.
  • Refund and void workflows required careful state management to handle partial refunds, same-day voids, and next-day returns correctly across all payment methods — with receipt reprinting and transaction history accessible from any terminal in the fleet.
  • End-of-day settlement needed to be optimised to batch and close transactions in a sequence that minimised interchange fees and processing costs — a commercially critical requirement for high-volume merchants.

Our Solution

  • FoogleTech built the POS application in Java on Android using Android Studio, with native C/C++ integration for the low-level PAX hardware payment SDK — creating a unified payment abstraction layer that routes each transaction to the correct hardware tender path (NFC, chip, swipe, or QR) without any merchant-facing configuration.
  • A configurable tip workflow module was developed with merchant-level enable/disable settings, percentage and custom amount entry options, and pre-authorisation tip capture — fully integrated into both the receipt flow and EOD settlement batch to ensure tip amounts reconcile correctly against card network reports.
  • Refund and void handling was implemented with full transaction state persistence — allowing operators to look up any prior transaction by receipt number or card last-four, process partial or full refunds, and reprint original or refund receipts from any authorised terminal.
  • EOD settlement was redesigned with a batching algorithm that groups and submits transactions in the optimal sequence for the merchant's acquiring bank, reducing unnecessary authorisation holds and improving settlement timing — directly lowering processing costs for high-volume locations.

Results & Outcomes

  • Single terminal now serving all four tender types — contactless NFC, EMV chip, magnetic stripe, and QR payments — deployed to retail merchants and restaurant operators without additional hardware investment.
  • Restaurant tip workflow operating reliably across tip-enabled merchant accounts, with tip amounts reconciling correctly in EOD settlement batches and card network reports.
